Squarespace disrupts two industries – web development and
web hosting. For a flat fee starting from $8 a month, companies now get to
build and host a slick website that would have otherwise cost thousands of
dollars by hiring a web developer. Customers will even be able to integrate an
e commerce platform into their website and have access to a custom domain so
that their site will leave a professional impression. More recently,
Squarespace also gave customers to ability to design a logo – potentially disrupting
the design industry.
While Squarespace is a relatively quick, economical and
simple way to establish a presence in the web, it might not appeal to medium to
large sized companies. These firms need to establish a unique identity and therefore
cannot rely on templates and generic logos. Squarespace might provide a certain
degree of customization, but there is only a finite number of
permutations before two sites or logos start to look similar. Undoubtedly,
web developers and designers still have a market that comprises of these larger
firms, but unfortunately the pie for them will continue to shrink as sites like
Squarespace become more sophisticated.
