E-Commerce Deliciousness

Do you love the produce and goods at farmer’s markets but your local one just always closes up right when you get back from work? Another great idea born in the Silicon Valley helps solve this problem if you live in the San Francisco area.  Good Eggs is an online service where consumers can order farm fresh foods and goods from local food producers that are delivered right to your door.  The site accomplishes two goals: 1) it supports the “local food system” and gives it another outlet to grow, 2) it makes local food much more accessible to city dwellers.  There are about 40 vendors currently signed up to provide goods through the site, some of which exclusively sell through Good Eggs, and they range from farmers to local food artisans that sell anything from wood-fire baked breads to pies that only use local ingredients.  The site is made even more robust by an events calendar and blog with posts by relevant successful people in the food industry.

I think this is a great way to use technology and the digital space to make quality goods more accessible to people while helping local businesses and their passionate owners thrive.  I checked out Good Eggs for myself to get a feel for the site and loved the way it was set up.  It’s fun without being overly crowded, and it’s very easy to navigate.  The homepage lists the neighborhoods where Good Eggs currently delivers.  Once you choose your neighborhood, a listing of the participating vendors pops up.  I like that the images representing each vendor were of the people who actual own and operate the small businesses – not of logos.  This made the experience feel more personal.  Right under the image, the site states the business’ name, a short description, and an indication as to the delivery timing depending on when the order is placed.  Good Eggs has clearly integrated their social media strategy on the site, including facebook and twitter buttons at the top of each page.  I’ll be following to find out when they’ll be expanding to NY.  Everything looked and sounded so delicious – I got hungry just navigating the site!
