Google Users Directed to Encrypted Search Query

Google has changed the rules again, announcing on Monday that "all Google-referred, organic traffic" will be directed to the encrypted search query.  This search query data will not be available to advertisers or webmasters, because it will be classified as "not provided".

This change will have a significant impact on webmasters and advertisers.  Many sites receive more than half of their referrals from Google and, due to the recent rule changes, the businesses that study data analytics for these sites will no longer be able to research the terms or words that were used in those searches.

Many small business owners have cried foul, saying that Google is guilty of a double standard, and is applying these new rules under the guise of "provided added privacy for search users".  It is hard for Google to justify its moves on this basis, given the fact that paid search advertisers will still be able to have access to the data generated by Google-referred organic traffic.

Is Google taking these steps in an effort to ensure that their company becomes a part of every future advertising/search-related transaction on the web?  The idea doesn't seem so far-fetched!
