Rise of Social Media in Sales

I recently read an interesting article about the evolving role of social media in sales. Sales is a very personal and relationship-based business and it's been around forever. While cold calls and sales demos were effective in the past, the internet is really redefining how salespeople can connect with their target customers.

The article talks about some of the key techniques on how a salesperson can leverage social connections to do everything from identify disgruntled customers of competitors to connect with the most influential decision-makers in an organization.

Reading this article did make me feel little wary of my own personal web presence and what companies and sales people could be using (and mining) to get me to buy what they want to sell. Am I sharing a little too much information about my likes and preferences?
