NY Comic-Con Apologizes for Tweeting on Participants' Behalf


This weekend, the organizers of New York Comic-Con had to issue an apology, when participants realized that the conference was tweeting on their behalf.

Attendees were given RFID badges that could be registered online and linked to their social media accounts. It wasn't clear to many, however, that in doing so, they were opting in to a service where Comic-Con could then post to their Twitter or Facebook feeds on their behalf during the conference. When attendees realized these tweets were being published, Comic-Con had to backtrack and end this marketing attempt.

This is a timely reminder of the conflict between user privacy and new digital marketing strategies, particularly as we consider Google's new strategy of using our images and names in ads.
