Part II: Ready to Cut the Cord

Yes, it’s true that my “two year special rate” with Verizon expired recently, which prompted my initial inquiries into cutting cable TV because my bill had suddenly increased from $89.99 per month (three-play package) to ~$175 per month. Yes, I do work full time, and I can probably afford it, but seriously? It’s $175 per month for cable and Internet?!?! And for those wondering aloud, yes, I did try to “threaten” Verizon with dropping service, but the company didn’t respond to my tactics (good thing I’m registered for Negotiations class next semester!). Back to the topic of my initial blog – yes, all of the facts presented to date have led me to where I am today, and that is in a position where I am seriously considering my options to “cut the cord.”

Below are the links to some of the better pages that I have reviewed on the Internet that discuss the process of abandoning cable TV (at least for the time being). For the record, I wasn't quite convinced that now is the best time for me to make that change in my life (what if I miss the season finale of "Revenge?").  Before choosing to “cut the cord,” I’ve decided to try one more tactic with Verizon – I’m going to try to change the name on the account by insisting that the person currently listed is moving out. How could I not give it a shot? Verizon announced this past weekend new rates that are being marketed to holiday shoppers – special (read: cheap!) rates – $79.99 for the triple play package plus $300 cash back via a pre-paid credit card! Cutting the cord might have to wait – and so it may be the case that I don’t quite escape marketers…yet.  It's ok though b/c the digital marketers of the websites I frequent are doing a heck of a job following me around the Internet and sending me excellent promotional offers – so excellent that my holiday shopping bill is starting to build up – and we haven't even reached Thanksgiving (more on email marketing to come in my next post).
