The Selfie + Drones = The New ‘Dronie’

Do you enjoy taking selfies as much as the general internet public? Well then, it looks like you can soon add another sphere to your selfie with the ‘Dronie’. A dronie is basically a selfie taken to the sky by a drone. For example, a drone could be taking a short video of you, starting with a close-up, then zooming out to big picture view, while you’re smiling and waving into the camera.

While Google already has Google Earth and Google Street View, and recently bought several robotics companies, Vimeo just opened its own ‘dronie’ channel, and twitter introduced a ‘dronie’ account featuring Patrick Stewart.

However, it is not clear to me how users will embrace drones in selfies. And if governments will try to regulate drone video creation and content distribution, e.g. videos taken of other people without their consent. And so we are back at the privacy discussion.

What do you think of dronies – a great new way for self-expression and aerial photography, or just another way to breach people’s privacy?
