How can technology make interactive, yet non-intrusive, ads?

When you surf the web for hours during a single day you get so accustomed with all the display ads on the page - in particular for the websites that you visit most frequently - that you don't see them anymore. 
It's not that you try to avoid them, you truly can't see them: they are always there in the same position, static, and they never helped you in any way the first times they could still get your attention, so why bother?

Online reader habits are dramatically changed in the past few years.......and it doesn't matter if marketers still believe the CPM is a good measure. If you don't engage users, you are wasting money.
