3-D on the Internet?

In today's NY Times, there is an article called Dreaming of a 3-D Web. (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/31/dreaming-of-a-3-d-web/index.html?ref=technology) The article covers how a new company called Vivaty will be bringing 3-D images to the web. It will begin a private test on Facebook this week and hopes to create 3-D chat rooms and social blogs. Who knows, maybe A Little Class on the Internet will become 3-D.

Chief Platform Officer, Tony Parisi has said “Nothing is as immersive as a full 3-D environment,” Mr. Parisi said via e-mail. “And nothing is as relevant as a 3-D experience you control with your own content and share with your own friends.”

Vivaty hopes to create more accessible versions of multiplayer platforms like Second Life. In the early stages of the web, programmers tried to bring 3-D to the web but never took off. I'll be interested in seeing how successful this second coming is. As long as it doesn't take more time to load a webpage...
