Pinterest: A New Way to Market

Though Pinterest is still in it's infancy with regards to being used by marketers, it is fast becoming embraced by many. The Pinboard website recently hit 10 million unique monthly views (this was even faster than Facebook). The image "pinning" model, on which Pinterest is based, has already spawned a discussion on how Pinterest can be used to market products.

Below are a few key concepts marketers can keep in mind when marketing on Pinterest:

1) Smart Pinning: It might be a good idea to pin content that is tangentially related to your business, so that people may be able to link your value proposition to their interests, something that they may not have been able to do before.
2) Create Beautiful Content: Pinterest is all about how stuff looks - in fact, the visual appeal is what accounts for the 86% of new user generation! This is even greater than the 57% that Facebook generates.
3) Use Pins for Competitions! Pinterest encourages virality by the way it has been designed. In fact, 80% of pins are re-pins. Engagement comes quite naturally to Pinterest users - this may be because it is easier to search for what you love, versus being forced to see a lot of content that you may not enjoy (think incessant baby pictures on Facebook ;))
4) Research and Measure Pins: Pinterest is trying hard to make itself small business friendly, and is giving people the option to track recent activity and look at analytics. This might be something to keep in mind when trying to determine marketing strategy - in fact, keeping track of where Pinterest leads users to (via Google analytics) is a great way to see the effectiveness of the marketing campaign.
