Who Makes These Annoying Ads Anyway?

Ever wonder who is responsible for those annoying advertisements that pop-up, flash and dance across your screen (apart from the companies that pay for them)? There’s a good chance that PointRoll is the culprit. PointRoll specializes in creating rich media campaigns and performs work for more than 1,800 advertisers and agencies each year.

Pointroll emphasizes solutions that offer “tools and support to build the best, most effective page-based advertising.” Sure, that may sound promising to prospective clients, but as an [unintentional] end-consumer, to me it represents yet another window that needs to be closed on the internet before I can return to the work (or leisure) I set out for when opening Internet Explorer.

I must admit, the technology that PointRoll employs to run their advertisements is innovative and complex. And, the names they give to their various ad-types (i.e. FatBoy, BadBoy, TomBoy) are catchy. But this “coolness” factor, in my opinion, fails to compensate for the annoyance caused by the ads themselves. There will always be those who enjoy or benefit from the ads, but it would be nice to have more of a choice as to when, where and how the ads are made available.
