Yahoo is testing GIANT video ads in search results

Yahoo is testing giant takeover video ads in search results pages. This is how it works: the video ads, expand to take over most of the screen and autoplay on mute. The video does not collapse after ending, which means the user has to scroll down to click on the actual ad or see the other search results. The ads only appear to be running on desktop and not smartphones.

Is this the future of visual brand advertising? So far this seems to be an area that search engines haven’t been exploiting in a meaningful way, but is thought to have great potential. There is speculation that Google is prepping to roll out video in search, and Bing may be as well.

The Yahoo video is certainly interesting, however whether the execution will resonate with search users remains to be proven .To me, it has the potential to become an ultimate – annoying- way of forcing ads to the users. For instance, what happens if your connection is slow? What if you are on a meeting and just need to look something up in a rush? It looks to me that this idea is much more focused in generating revenue from the advertiser side rather than enhancing the customer experience.

Yahoo might keep you from your mail unless you deactivate your ad-block

An estimated 200 million people now actively use ad blockers worldwide — nearly two thirds the number of people who have a Twitter account, and the number is frantically increasing. That's a small fraction of the nearly 3 billion people estimated to use the Internet worldwide but enough to evaporate an almost $22 billion chunk of total online ads revenue this year.

While companies like The Washigton Post are trying “relatively mild solutions” like testing out a feature that directed ad block users to a subscription page, Yahoo has found a much more extreme solution.
It has launched a test run of a feature that locks out anyone who has an ad blocker installed. Basically, whenever these people try to access their email accounts, the screen orders them to first disable ad blockers in order to access their emails.
Of course there is logic to try to find a solution for ad blocking (the company keeps showing decreasing results ver the last quarters). Nevertheless, by simply impeding their users to see their emails unless they deactivate their ad blockers, Yahoo seems to have found the fastest way to wipe out its own email customer base.

E-paper Sneakers- becoming true in Fall 2016

New York-based ShiftWear has created a new pair of shoes that integrates technology directly into the shoe itself. Although ShiftWear sneakers look like normal sneakers, the sides are made of a flexible e-paper display. The designs on the display can be altered via a smartphone app to feature different graphics and illustrations — even ones you illustrate yourself — and ShiftWear hopes users will create a mobile marketplace of shapeshifting shoe styles.

Although this is not the first innovation in the field of tech wearables, it could be argued that they are posed to make a change: whereas all innovation in this arena seems to skip fashion, these sneakers are actually “nice to wear”.

So, once these sneakers are out there, and competitors start to follow, this might create a whole new landscape for marketers to leverage. From now on customers might not only be displaying the brand they purchase, but they might become a white canvas for display advertising to fill.

Shiftwear seems confident. It's taking preorders for three different styles of shoe for $150, $250, and $350 on Indiegogo with a delivery date of fall 2016. Five people have even put down $1,000 each for a limited edition pair with an even larger e-paper display encasing most of the shoe, while more than 300 backers have paid nearly $75,000 for cheaper models.

So watch out marketers, this is becoming real!

Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and wearables open a new landscape for marketing

Ambient interactivity in public places (VR, AR, wearable technologies) is expected to significantly grow over the next five years, creating a new landscape for marketers.
Some of the more common forms of ambient interactivity include interactive windows and interactive tables, which are being leveraged to deliver informational, marketing, and entertainment applications.

In fact, wearable technology—from Google Glass to Apple's iWatch to the Fitbit—is poised to become a billion-dollar industry worldwide. Analyst firm Juniper Research predicted that wearable spending would hit $1.4 billion in 2013 and will reach a staggering $19.0 billion by 2018.

And where consumers go, marketers follow. The marketing promise of wearables is tantalizingly apparent. For example, it's no stretch to imagine consumers in a shopping mall targeted with personalized, relevant advertising via their wearable device. And that may happen sooner rather than later. Qualcomm Retail Solutions' platform Gimbal already enables retailers to scan customers' smartphones to deliver timely personalized content. And just last week mobile powerhouse Hipcricket announced that its AD LIFE platform will now support website rendering and text messaging technology across wearable technology, such as Google Glass.
