Amazon's PartFinder leverages camera tech to boost online sales of assembly parts

Athough, AI-based camera technology has been leveraged by Google Goggles in the past, it has only been able to be used on popular day-to-day consumer products. Amazon acquired a new company in 2017 called PartPic which using camera technology can identify any part (screw, bolt, nut etc) used for assembling modern furniture or devices. The feature is currently capable of identifying over 100 types of fasteners which represent thousands, if not millions of parts. The technology uses computer vision to identify the part and then use the Amazon directory to match the part with a product in the Amazon catalog. With innovation like PartPic, Amazon is really going after the long tail of consumer products such as assembly parts that are often difficult for the average consumer to identify.
