Instagram's new "Regramming" feature

Instagram is testing out a new feature that will let users share public feed posts from other users to their personal Instagram stories. This new feature allows users to add commentary to other's posts or simply highlight other content in their own feed. In my opinion, this is a smart move on Instagram's part as it allows the platform to take advantage of a behavior that users currently do by tagging friends in others posts but makes it much more seamless and allows for sharing to a greater audience.

This is great news for brands who will get more exposure for their visual content and allow them to take advantage of the network effects on Instagram. Previously brand's content on Instagram had a short shelf life and were only exposed to those who already followed the brand, now with the ability to share content they open themselves up to find brand new customers. This also allows brands to more easily identify and get their content into the hands of the right influencers who can spread the brand to their networks.

It remains to be seen how this new regram feature will rival against other social platforms such as Pinterest that have similar functionality with "re-pinning". Since Instagram stories last only for 24 hours vs. Pinterest boards that are permanent, it will be interesting to see how brand marketers approach shifting their budget and resources towards visual content on Instagram and how they will measure the success and value of this new feature.
