Advertisers Follow Audiences into Games

As online gaming continues to gain popularity across multiple genres, advertising has found its place amongst the gaming clutter.

Roughly $1 billion will be spent this year on ads in games in the United States, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the figure is predicted to increase by a third in the next four years.Roughly $1 billion will be spent this year on ads in games in the United States, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the figure is predicted to increase by a third in the next four years.

The advertising is traditionally in the form of banner advertising but some advertisers are integrating the ads into games itself. The way that advertisements are shown is called "freemium" where gamers watch an ad instead of paying for a game upgrade.

Google has a product to meet this need - Google's AdSense for Games - which allows advertisers to display an ad before, during or after a game.

Just yet another form of advertising for brands to utilize for either brand awareness or driving purchasing behavior. Whether or not these are effective are yet to be determined.....
