Mobile-Ad Firms Gaining Traction

I read an interesting article on my b-berry about Medialites, a rich media advertising and analytics platform for native applications on devices such as iPhones (see http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090512/7278/). Medialites, a start-up founded in July 2008, just scored $4 million funding from the Foundry Group and DFJ Gotham, with participation from Bobby Yazdani, an early investor in Google and Salesforce.com. Medialites estimates the advertising market for iPhone and Android apps at around $100 million, with a 3x increase within the next four years. Similarly, Velti announced the acquisition of AdInfuse on Tuesday, May 12, an advertising firm focused on building Web sites designed specifically to be visited via mobile devices and creating technologies that deliver ads in text messages.

The general theme here seems to be that companies and investors alike are hungry to get a piece of the mobile ad action. Given the high fragmentation of the mobile ad market, we should expect to see significant M&A and equity-infusion activity that will fuel market consolidation over the course of the next few years.
