Influencer marketing is a type of marketing in which products and services are promoted by "influencers" who are highly influential on social media like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  Influencers stimulate consumer's desire for purchasing products and services.  This marketing is similar to the traditional marketing technique, word of mouth.

However, this article argues that influencer marketing strategies are becoming less and less effective.

Indeed, I feel that influencer marketing has been on the rise for the past few years. I have been to restaurants and bought clothes based on Instagram posts. I have also looked at Twitter posts and decided where to go on vacation.

As you can see in the article,  some customers could be discouraged when a post on social media is blatantly tied to a marketing strategy company plans.  It may also be due to consumers demanding more fairness and honesty from companies.

So what will become of influencer marketing? I believe there will be a need for closer communication between consumers and influencers/companies because consumers value things and people that feel familiar to them. Besides, I think that influencer marketing needs to target smaller and specified segments of consumers.

I believe that influencer marketing will develop by effectively promoting trust in products and services and focusing on quality rather than quantity. I will be watching closely to see how influencer marketing develops in the COVID era.
