Google Shopping search engine will be charging companies for product search listings by autumn this year. Google's product search drives about $1.3bn worth of traffic in annual sales globally. For the last decade, Google has been providing listings for free with results based solely on relevance. Google expects this move to not only generate new profit but also make search results more reliable and up-to-date. This will change the game for companies like Amazon and eBay who will now face fees in order to appear in Google Shopping's search results.
I think that Bing Shopping (Bing.com/shopping) may try to take advantage of this opportunity to market their search engine which is similar to Google's and drives traffic to company websites for free. This enables both small and large retailers to play in the market.
