As tech companies compete to find the next new platform/technology that will change the landscape many are focusing on AR/VR as potential vehicles. Apple is expected to be one of the first to make a big wave in this space with Apple Glasses expected to be announced anytime and Facebook is making strides with their Oculus platform. But what will this mean for the future of advertising if consumers are able to interact with technology and gather information at an even more rapid pace?
The first brands to launch a successful AR campaign will be able to create an immersive experience like never seen before. This immersion makes me think that film/tv/gaming companies will be the first to launch these kinds of campaigns. They already have large advertising budgets and some of the networks and gaming companies have been the first to pick up on emerging trends (such as HBO's use of 360 video).
But consumer goods companies could also find case studies to make them early adopters. Such as targeted ads to consumers as they shop, reminding consumers to re-purchase if they see a product being thrown into the trash after running out, or allowing customers to quickly scan QR codes. Some of these methods are incredibly cost-effective and will allow for incredible segmentation and targeting.
