Digital marketing tools allow startups frequently having very limited budgets grow at a much lower cost than traditional marketing channels such as TV, newspapers, or street banners.

In addition, digital marketing supplies startups and other organizations actively leveraging it with precious data (almost everything is trackable in digital marketing). The article author, Mandeep Singh, Founder of SEO Discovery, suggests startups to focus on three best practices:

1. Selecting right channels

The author suggests building up a marketing mix which could consist of SEO, PPC, Social Media, etc. by looking at competitors. Similarly as covered in Digital Marketing class some of the good tools to achieve the task include: SEMrush, SpyFu, SimilarWeb and Ahres. Even though I also believe it is important to know what competitors do, I also think that it is crucial for companies to be able to differentiate themselves and follow only some of competitors best practices without copying everything they do

2. Focusing on SEO

Customers journey almost always starts with search. Thus, it is crucially important to have high ranking in search results. To achieve the goal the author provides a list of techniques similar to the ones covered in class:

  • Leverage tools like Google Keyword Planner to find and incorporate best keywords into the website
  • Optimize meta tags to ensure relevancy and enhance click-through rate
  • Optimize content to have long-tail keywords
  • Build backlinks from relevant and high-authority websites. Using tools like Ahrefs and Majestic can help identify what sources competitors leveraged in building their backlinks
3. Optimize for Mobile
Given the high usage of smartphones in daily life, Google uses mobile version of websited for ranking
