Twitter Usage Statistics

I just read a TechCrunch blog on Twitter usage statistics. The link is here.

Interesting stuff. The data show that 80 percent of Twitter accounts have fewer than 10 followers…like me. And, 30 percent have zero followers. This means that quite a few users that signed up in a spate of curiosity never returned…again, like me.

Straight from the TechCrunch blog, here are some more detailed statistics that are quite interesting:

Followers
Accounts with 0 followers: 29.4%
Accounts with 1 to 9 followers: 50.9%
Accounts with 10 or more followers: 19.7%

Followings
Accounts following 0 people: 24.4%
Accounts following 1 to 9 people: 43.4%
Accounts following 10 or more people: 32.2%

Tweets
Accounts with 0 Tweets: 37.1%
Accounts with 1 to 9 Tweets: 41.0%
Accounts with more 10 or more Tweets: 21.9%

Despite these dreary looking numbers, 32 million people visited Twitter in April alone. Yeah, 32 million.

In terms of advertising, if Twitter charges $5 CPM to put one banner ad on its site, it amounts to $160,000 in revenue per month, or $1.92 million per year, per advertisement. That’s nothing to shake a stick at. But, the question lingers: would Twitter users tolerate such advertisements, especially since Twitter is currently ad free?
