Yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported that nine tech companies, including Google and eBay, sent a letter to congress protesting an antipiracy bill.
Specifically, the bill would allow the US attorney general to force US internet sites and search engines to block sites with pirated material.
Given the rampant spread of piracy (know and unknown) throughout the internet, this would place a significant burden on web-based companies, yet these measures would protect content creators and preserve one of the US’s strongest industries: entertainment.
In an era of outsourcing just about everything to low-cost labor countries, we have to protect the content creators in the US to ensure that we remain the entertainment capital of the world for movies and music. Both industries are reinventing their business models to adapt to a digital era, so it’s vital that we have a legal environment to protect the efforts that go into content creation.
