Does Twitter have a good idea?

Co.Exist write an article on Twitter's new project to use algorithms to bring local communities together. Somehow i dont think this would be a feasible project. Primarily Twitter's main goal of anonymity and quick posts goes against the idea of railing forces behind local issues. The article mentions using twitter in case of emergency situations, where people in the same area will receive posts with information. However, I dont see a difference from following a local news station that will be posting information in this case. Additionally, it seems Twitter is trying to adapt to Facebook's ability to unite people. Yet, if I wanted to find someone in my area, i would simply search the web for blogposts or find groups on facebook. It would be interesting to see where Twitter ends up with this.
