Louisville Slugger Enters the Ecommerce Space

Louisville Slugger has entered a partnership with an ecommerce solution provider in order to revamp its presence in the ecommerce space. The baseball gear manufacturer’s goal is to enable desktop and mobile consumers to purchase all of its products in one place. Up until this move, the company only offered a handful of products on its website and mobile app, choosing instead to focus its marketing efforts on more traditional retail outlets and sporting goods stores.

I found this story interesting because I was at first a little skeptical of the idea that a large number of customers looking for bats and gloves will choose to shop online. My thought would be that many baseball players want to get a feel for their bat and fielding glove in person rather than shop online. The more I thought about it, though, I realized that Louisville Slugger makes so many other baseball products that don't require such personalization: apparel, batting gloves, bases, protective gear, etc. Furthermore, Louisville Slugger may be able to get more casual baseball/softball players to purchase their gear online, while more serious players may choose to do their shopping in person. It will be interesting to see what kind of customers choose to use purchase their gear online and if the company is able to drive growth through the app and website.
