Old Media Meets New Media

Digital is hot. With this steady phenomenon, more people are starting to pursue job opportunities at the larger players within the digital realm. According to BusinessWeek, undergraduate students in the U.S. ranked Google first and Apple second for “Top Employers” in 2010. With this increasing interest in digital, old media companies are also starting to recruit talent with new media experience in order to help them compete with the more digital-savvy companies.

VentureBeat reported that Publishers Clearing House (PCH) has recently hired Jason John, former vice president of marketing and strategy at Gilt Groupe, to PCH’s digital executive team. He is to help the marketing sweepstakes company grow its digital presence with new mobile apps and games. Earlier this year, PCH hired Mark Cullinane, an executive at GSN, to help expand into new digital businesses. Both new hires signal PCH’s growing focus on digital marketing and the company’s willingness to hire external talent in order to achieve this initiative.

PCH is widely known for sponsoring sweepstakes with grand prizes and marketing magazine subscriptions. The company wants to become the leading media and entertainment network by focusing on digital and is looking to achieve this goal by hiring people with experience in the digital pure-play business.

Other companies have focused on pursuing digital talent as well. In 2009, AOL fired its CEO and replaced him with Tim Armstrong, who was then the head of ad sales at Google.
