A recent study performed by TrackMaven analyses the use of Instragram by Fortune 500 firms. As of September, just under 25% of the Fortune 500s use Instagram - with varying degrees of success. The top three brands with most followers are: Nike (2.3m followers), Starbucks (1.5m followers) and Foot Locker (0.5m followers).
They key to measuring the success of an Instagram campaign is not necessarily how many followers a brand has but how many interactions they have (likes, comments). The chart below shows two outliers - on the top right, Nike has pulled in 93,714 interactions and Starbucks has pulled in 56,747 interactions on photos.
To get the most interactions, TrackMaven shared a few tips:
1. Use multiple hashtags
Using 4 to 11 hashtags on Instagram can increase up to on average 77 interactions per instagram post. Best practive would be to try to integrate them into your caption as opposed to lumping them together at the bottom of your post.
2. Post 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
As most users are actively on Instagram through their mobile devices, brands should post a different times of the day and week and not just during business hours. Brands should also test which posting schedules resonates the most with their audience segment.
3. Use videos
Instagram released videos a few months ago and although they are currently slightly less effective than pictures in terms of interactions, brands should lead the way and provide users with more variety by using pictures and videos.
In addition, videos are only 15 seconds long and allows brands to create content which may be more exciting (and hence inspire more interactions) than photos.
