Politics go Digital

Candidates are relying more and more on social media to help their campaigns. Take for example Bill de Blasio, who has run the mot effective campaign on social media of any mayoral candidate: he has scored 92 out of 100 on the "Digital Engagement Index", which takes into account presence on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and email.
Some rough numbers include: 16,130 followers of his campaign account on Twitter, 14,934 likes on Facebook, 510,000 views on YouTube and 738 followers on Instagram - more than twice the numbers for the second-best campaign.
Obama was the first candidate to effectively utilize a digital strategy on a national level - and the impact was so positive that many others are now trying to reach younger demographics and diverse ethnic groups through the Internet. As some strategists claim, relying on social media for candidates is no longer a "nice-to-have" - it is a vital part of their campaign.
