With the growth of digital devices including smartphones and
tablet PCs, a new opportunity to reach people beyond the desktop has
emerged. Although every industry is trying to
determine how to best take advantage of this opportunity, this emergence of handheld technology has
particular relevance for sports.
Before this new era of digital reach, sports were fairly
straightforward for players and spectators. Smartphones and tablet PCs have now
introduced a third actor into the spectator experience. Teams and leagues that best leverage the
potential for second screen technology provide not only an improved viewer
experience but also another opportunity to introduce corporate partners
and sponsors to their audiences.
In May, Major League Soccer introduced Golazo, a new digital
interface to enhance the digital element of their viewing experience. Golazo provides instant stat updates and a
stream of info regarding the game.
Additionally, the program integrates social media into the information
stream, further integrating viewers into the Golazo experience.
Although Golazo compliments MLS’ current iPad
and iPhone app, MatchDay, it is not yet integrated with the app. In order to best improve the viewer experience,
this final step needs to be undertaken, so MLS fans can access the capabilities
of both platforms from one source.
