New research was shared recently about the console gaming
segment. According to The Future Foundation, it turns out that almost half of
all U.S. households own at least one gaming console. An even greater percentage
of households with millennials own a gaming console device. This is great news
for console game software developers and hardware manufacturers.
This seems like uplifting news for a market that has been
seeing a 1% year-over-year decrease in hardware and software sales. Meanwhile,
worldwide spending on mobile game apps tripled in 2013 to $16 billion. By 2020,
it is estimated that 50% of consumers will be using gaming apps.
But is it positive news that two third of households own
game consoles? This research could include households that own a console and
they plan on never purchasing a new version of a console again. So the stats do
not directly correlate to future hardware or software sales. And as the
marketplace continues to flood with different gaming options, who knows if
consoles will continue to hold a large percentage of the gaming market?
