On Thursday, Google began experimenting with a new service
to allow users to see fewer ads on certain websites for a small monthly fee. The
monthly fee ranges between $1 and $3 per site, and a cut will be paid to the
site operator. Once a user pay, the ads that usually show will be replaced with
“thank you messages” such as a banner that says “Thank you for being a
contributor”.
Google is currently working with just 10 sites, and it is worth
noting that the site may not be completely ad free. This is because Google can
only remove ads that it serves, and there are other ad serving technologies out
there whose ads may still appear. That said, a user will likely see fewer ads,
rather than no ads at all.
The experiment has started out small. This effort follows
other Google pay experiments, such as Consumer Surveys, which allowed users to
respond to a brief survey rather than seeing an ad. This survey would be
financed by someone interested in collecting survey information, similar to
Amazon’s Mechanical Turk.
