Seeding Viral Marketing

As a follow-up to one of my previous posts about making viral content - the ultimate dream of any marketer- I came across this article on the Harvard Business Review. 
 
They suggest that traditional mass marketing tools can be used to direct traffic to online content, which is not different than the typical brand awareness etc. purpose of such traditional marketing, however, if the online content is easily shareable, you can increase the potential for such online content to go viral, or at least "viral-ish"...
 
I speculate that we will continue to see more research done on this topic, and the holy grail of digital marketing will stay allusive.
