In an attempt to reach new potential subscribers, The New York Times has started running native advertisements on competitor websites. In the past, The New York Times has run advertisements on The Awl, Gothamist, and Digg. The current campaign includes 4 native advertisements on Mashable that will run through the end of the month.
The first ad, "11 Inspiring Videos That Will Restore Your Faith in Humanity", is presented by The New York Times, but otherwise appears very much like content that would appear on Mashable and appeal to Mashable readers. The other piece of content that has been posted lists cultural icons who have written for The New York Times.
The company has stated that the goal of the advertising is to introduce Mashable readers to the breadth of The New York Times' offerings. The Times stated that they chose Mashable because it wants to target the demographic that Mashable's audience base is comprised of and because of the support that Mashable's site and social media offers for advertisers.
