This past summer, Walmart rolled out a new mobile app called Savings Catcher, an app that is able to pull pricing information from its competitors from customers' receipts. According to the website, the app's point is to provide further proof that Walmart's prices are unbeatable. All the customer has to do is download the app and scan the Walmart receipt number. The app then compares the local competitor's prices to Walmart's prices and guarantees that Walmart will match the price of any local competitor's printed ad for an identical product. If Savings Catcher finds that the competitor is offering a lower price, then the customer receives an eGiftcard for the difference. Not only is this app a win for price sensitive consumers, but in enables Walmart to strengthen its customer knowledge platform by linking digital data with in-store data. It provides Walmart with troves of data and valuable insight into consumers' spending habits, where they shop and exactly what products they are buying. What is yet to be seen however is how much consumers actually end up saving through the app.
