Is SEO Dead?

Apparently, in the last few months, Google has redesigned its search results page. The major changes? Essentially de-emphasizing SEO and featuring paid search even more. As the article referenced below suggests, I tried a simple search for "restaurant furniture." As seen in the image below, everything on the page is a paid ad and nothing is organic. In fact, I had to scroll a great deal, past a Google Map and its associated search results, to find the first instance of an organic result.

This hints at a troubling conclusion: that SEO may be just about dead. The author of the article phrases it best: "If there is no way to get your organic search result in that position based on the current Google page design, then why focus on SEO at all? Your focus needs to be on shelling out a lot of money to Google to make sure your business is promoted in Google Ads, Google Local and Google Shopping placements on the page."

With one tweak of the results page, Google has quite effectively forced companies to fork over more money in order to stay relevant. If they don't, they might find themselves among the dead bodies on the second page, no matter how good their SEO strategy.
