In 2009, with the worldwide launch of Avatar, 3D movies made the leap from funky ride at the theme park to the local theatre. Currently we are starting to hear about a bunch of movies that will come out in 3D during the year. At this pace, 2010 is going to become the year when 3D movies became mainstream.
However, it seems that a lot of the movies currently being converted into 3D might be doing it just to follow the trend. The highly anticipated Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton and produced by Disney, will transport viewers into a wacky and fantasy world. 3D might enhance the experience as the movie is all about playing with your senses and stretching the limits of your imagination. Clash of the Titans is also rumoured to being hastily converted into 3D. But, will this enhance the cinematic experience?
Maybe, but to me this sounds like opportunism and cutting corners, and I believe that it will show up in the end result. Once the novelty of putting on some ridiculous glasses in the theatre wears off, moviegoers might become more selective or even wary before viewing any movie that is marketed as 3D.
