BigSpot.com: Paying Consumers to Take Surveys

I was watching TV last night and saw an ad for BigSpot.com, a consumer research website. Users create accounts on BigSpot.com and in return for filling out surveys and participating in panels, they receive cash and prizes. Generally I wouldn’t have noticed an ad like this but after hearing Professor Kagan talk about how difficult and expensive it is to get internet users to fill out surveys, it caught my attention. At first, I thought the site seemed like a useful and cost-efficient tool. However, after further reflection, I think I would be concerned about the integrity of the results primarily because I’m not sure the samples would be representative of a company’s target population. I would assume a lot of “professional survey takers” would sign up for accounts and skew survey and panel results. Perhaps this is a problem with all online surveys though. . . What do you think?
