Is Viacom’s EPIX the new king of the digital movie universe?

Hardly, however, there is something to be said for what they are doing building alliances with large cable providers. Today’s announcement that EPIX will be distributing some of their 15,000 movies on Charter Communication’s cable network is worthy of note.

It is their fourth such deal, raising their access to customers up to 15.2 million. EPIX, a company that is backed by and has content from Paramount, Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM, provides streaming video across TV, computer and mobile devices. Much has been said about the possibilities of all films being available at the touch of a button. Indeed, there is a growing list of companies providing movies on digital platforms such as Hulu, Amazon VOD, itunes, Fancast, Babelgum and Netflix, yet they still are not completely main-stream.

Last year, Time Warner CEO, Jeff Bewkes announced the company’s TV Everywhere initiative, stunning some competitors when he said he expected their subscribers to get the service at no extra charge. With Dish Networks currently close to making a deal with EPIX, it would not be surprising if Time Warner and Comcast come soon. Saying that, EPIX is still limited to the content its partners provide but every step they take brings the country closer to the day where more people watch movies digitally than not.
