Foursquare capitalizing on the Olympics

Foursquare seems to have the right idea when it comes to promoting their service in face of the London Olympics.

The service has recently not only opened up a slew of merchant tools for use by London store owners but is also promoting itself as the location based "companion" of the Olympics.

Think about it, you're in town for the Olympics, you've spent WAY too much on hotels and travel, and you want to get a taste of London but you want to be rewarded for what you're doing.  The Foursquare game and deals seem like just the ticket to help direct visitors and locals alike to try some new places (or continue to frequent their current favorites) with the lure of a deal.

Here's a quick summary of many of the things that Foursquare has done for the Olympics:
1.  Prior to the Olympics allowed users to unlock the "Get fit for the Olympics" badge when they checked into 2 sports/fitness related locations.  This badge then was targeted for a "give away" of Tickets to the Olympics.  As another example, the Olympic Torch relay badge was also released to allow anyone that was in the vicinity of the Torch relay to check in.

2. Plug into the official London 2012 app - all of a customer's social checks will run through Foursquare

3. London 2012 has a page on Foursquare with relevant content, this content includes:
  • Offers tips on where to go and what to see
  • Provides instructions on how to get around
  • Shares historical tidbits of the location
4. Plugged into content from local publishers (e.g., The Guardian, The Telegraph and Time Out London so that their web content is tagged to relevant locations

5. Extended their relationship with American Express to ensure that their statement credits programs work with Local London vendors
