Are internet sitcom effective as television for pitching brands?

The big internet guys Yahoo, Google, AOL and Microsoft visited the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival last week (likely for the first time ever). 
What for? "The digital companies came bearing scripts, pilots for shows, and a hard sell on the benefits of online ads". 
Are online sitcom going to be as valuable as TV programs for advertisers?
