Digital Marketing Gone to the Dogs

Heard of Birchbox? It's a fun subscription that sends a box full of beauty product samples to your house each month. Well now there's a similar one for your pooch, and it's being heavily marketed online. BarkBox is a subscription service that delivers a monthly box full of fun toys, gifts and gadgets for your dog. Similar to how Birchbox has fantastic online brand presence, Barkbox is using Facebook to create top-of-mind awareness for the brand. Thus far, Barkbox has more than 50,000 paying customers, and has ended up retaining 90%+ of their subscribers from one month to the next too.

BarkBox's success can be attributed to the fact that they really understand what goes on in the mind of a pet owner, and it's quite simple: dogs are members of the family. Through Facebook, they have also  gotten to know their audience very well, and can thus target the campaign to them accordingly. Their customer base consists mainly of women aged 25-35 who are single and have disposable income, as well as women aged 50+ who are empty-nesters and have a lot more time on their hands.

But subscription services aren't the only things being marketed online for pets. Pet brands have been going social at an increasing rate and using content aggregation platforms like Buzzfeed to publicize their products through viral image competitions and more. Pet related apps are also a growing industry and have been using digital marketing to spread the word. For example, DoggyDatez is a location-based mobile app for finding company while walking your dog. By "marking your territory", you're taking ownership of an area (200m radius) in the physical world and seeing who else "visits" your spot!

Given just how popular images of cute puppies and kittens are online, it's not a surprise that pet related companies are being able to capitalize on technology and digital marketing to further their image and create a strong brand presence.
