Leveraging Reddit to Digital Marketing

A recent article from The Guardian talked about “How to integrate reddit into your next digital marketing campaign”.

Reddit is a social-driven content repository and the article argue that although other platforms as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin are highly studied, there’s a lack of research and knowledge about Reddit’s potential, but apparently those who are using it achieved quite good results.
The fact that it is composed of smaller communities (subreddits) makes it a valuable tool to any digital marketer as a B2C (business to consumer) gateway, particularly in research, creativity, promotion and lead generation.

By sorting links by popularity, one can understand what content performs best and test the eventual fit for that type of content. With this tool, every marketer has now access to primary research. The best part of it is that it is constantly updated.

Besides that, one can contribute to the communities that fit that company profile (have some pre-existing interest in your products). This will not only promote the brand (showing expertise and offering input) but also understand reactions and popularity.

Besides that, the website also allows to target subreddits with creative ads (placed at the top of each page). One can target subreddits that have a predisposition / interest in the company's products. And as in other platforms, all this can be also done at a user level considering their location.

The Guardian article gives on example:
“a family-run custom wood shop targeted subreddits such as the baseball, NFL, wedding, and sports communities with subreddit-specific headlines. This resulted in a 15% increase in their shop traffic, netting them new domestic and international customers. According to the case study, this was 22 times more cost-effective than other ad platforms.”

Apart from all this, Reddit is also a good way to the marketers themselves “discuss topics, ask questions, keep up with news, and participate in the community”.
An interesting article about the “7 Subreddits Online Marketers Should Follow” mentions some generic ones, such as R/Advertising or R/Socialmedia but also some other more creative ones as R/Bigseo and R/Whateveryouareworkingon.
