I recently read this article on SEJ titled: "5 Strategic ‘Must-Haves’ to Diversify Your Digital Marketing". It talks about the importance of being actively aware of new and changing opportunities with regards to marketing technologies and strategies. Specifically, it recommends five relatively new and upcoming ideas for marketers to adopt, which might become more mainstream in 2020. Of those five, I summarize the three most interesting to me:
1. Proximity Marketing and Beacons
Proximity beacons is a technology that allows marketers to send marketing messages to consumers on mobile devices based on their geo-location. One of the most successful examples is Starbucks, which uses beacons to send customers offers as they walk into stores and allows them to pay via app and rack up reward points. Recent improvements to the Google Beacon platform have made it more accessible and powerful than ever.
2. Conversational Commerce & Chatbots
Chatbots can integrate businesses with external platforms like Facebook to communicate with customers on their preferred messaging apps. New chatbot technology featuring powerful AI and natural language processing will make it a compelling tool for any e-commerce business.
3. Voice Search Optimization
There have been many studies and statistics showing the growth of voice search. A big change is that there are now clearly defined tactics to improve results. For example, "near me", "close by", and "local" intent opportunities can be captured and utilize to improve conversions. Another example is featured snippets, which are a primary source for voice results.
