"Gossip Girl" Goes Offline

I don't watch this show, but I'm sure many 18-34 year old fans of "Gossip Girl" who can't catch it when it airs on the CW are bummed right now. The network, a collaboration between Time Warner and CBS, announced that the next 5 episodes of this show will not be aired online. You can only see it when it broadcasts on the CW.

"For these next five weeks, the epicenter of the 'Gossip Girl' universe will be on the CW's broadcast television airwaves," said Dawn Ostroff, president-entertainment of the network, which is a joint venture of CBS Corp. and Time Warner.

Ratings for the show have been slipping. Bad rating = lower ad revenues = cancellation. In response, the networks execs have decided to, in a sense, force its fans to watch the broadcasts versus seeing it online or via DVR. CBS's "Jericho" was recently pulled due to low ratings, despite a huge online fan base . When the network canceled it, there was a strong fan response, prompting CBS to return the show for another season. However, the lack of viewership re-sealed Jericho's fate.

In short, while television networks love to see us active on their websites, they'd rather us watch their commercials on the TV.
