I was surprised to learn that the most popular type of video content on the internet was comedy. I am curious as to whether this represents a shift in popular culture away from drama and action due to changes in current events, i.e. war and a recession, or if comedy is simply the most appealing form of video to watch online. Should marketers respond to this trend in genre by making video ads funny? In our marketing classes so far we have learned about matching the ad to the demographics or psychographics of the viewers, but what about matching the ads to the content? Should a funny viral video be accompanied by a funny display or video ad or are funny ads too risky to produce because they can so often flop?
Here is a spoof on the iconic Mastercard commerical from WikiLeaks that tries to tie in some ironic humor.
