Some more details to add to the email marketing discussion we had last friday, on technical set up to ensure emails do not get blocked by ISPs and Email Inbox providers.
This important configuration step often overlooked by the email marketing team because domain setup usually is delegated to an IT Infrastructure team within large organizations or the Email Marketing Service provider or your neighbor's cousin who is helping you with your website.
Some questions to ask would be:
a) Is the domain configured with appropriate SPF records (for the more technically inclined, mind numbing details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework)
b) Does the Service provider support DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM still not widely used)?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DomainKeys_Identified_Mail
Google implemented DKIM in Gmail with eBay.com and Paypal.com in 2008 to effectively block out all spoofing to any email claiming to come from these domains. The emails simply get blackholed and do not reach your mailbox (not even the junk folder). In Jan 2011 Google added this feature to their apps and enterprise email platform for free.
