Hollywood and social digital Media

It is very interesting to see from the below article how social media like facebook and twitter is being used increasingly  for marketing of upcoming Hollywood movies. The shift is complimentary to the the more traditional marketing tools including television and advertisements. The younger audiences who are frequent users of facebook and twitter also are the mainstream movie watchers in the theatres. Hence this strategy of using the social media to especially engage the younger crowds seems to be working very well and can help the movie sales by spreading the word around more effectively through the social media. Also by creating facebook pages and twitter accounts of movie characters, gives the potential moviegoing audience a chance to engage with these characters and hence it would most certainly result in increased sales for the movie industry. In my opinion the social media’s effective usage by the film industry will increase the box office results and also increase dvd sales of the movies when it is released.

As we've seen in class, the traditional methods of marketing have very poor analytic tools to measure reach and customer capture, and marketers (especially those looking to target younger generations who are entrenched in social media) will likely turn more and more to social media to reach target audiences.
