Copyright complaints & Google rank
According to a recent WSJ article, Google is going to start penalizing websites for improperly using copyrighted material. Websites that have several valid copyright removal notices will be ranked lower in search results. You may think that Google is doing this to help enforce the copyright laws on websites... but is it a coincidence that Google is currently attempting to be a major seller/distributor of video & music through YouTube? Regardless of Google's motivation this is a good step in the right direction. I can't blame Google for needing an incentive to do this. It is not their job to be a regulator. But they are the ones in the best position to provide real incentives for websites to avoid improperly using copyrighted content.
