Coming soon: App.net

App.net, Twitter alternative, said to rely on paid subscribers instead of ad dollars, has exceeded $500,000 goal in online funding campaign with over 10,000 backers.  30-day push to raise money is set to end tonight.

Founder, Dalton Caldwell, views free, Web 2.0 services as overly focused on advertisers.  Therefore, App.net goal: better user/developer experience.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty curious to see how this goes.  Not sure if I'm willing to pay for a service similar to Twitter, and Facebook for that matter.

It will be interesting to see how that business model works, especially as Facebook is struggling to have a sustainable business model. Without any real idea of what App.net will look like, it'll be hard to tell if they will be successful. For example, are they going to be better suited for mobile than Facebook? Or have better features than Twitter? Or have a more active user base than Google+ (or any user base outside of Google employees for that matter)?
