The Long Tail refers to the strategy of selling a large number of niche products, or a large number of items that are not necessarily niche to a consumer niche. Although sales of each item may be in small amounts, the aggregate sales of those items, along with sales of any popular items or among big spenders, generates profitable revenues.  Examples of  Long Tail revenue models include Google--ads, Amazon-books and products and Netflix-movies.

When it comes to search, publishers and advertisers can benefit from Long Tail SEO strategies such as publishers honing in on niche traffic with specialized content, and advertisers by using search terms that are not popular/top ranked to drive search traffic to their sites.  Analytics strategies and tools are being used for what is called “longtail keyword generation.”

Now longtail keyword generator tools like Keyword Researcher  which is a paid tool, and free tools like Ubersuggest .  You can export the resulting keywords and keyword phrases into excel to sort by your parameters, excluding or preferencing certain terms.  Then you can use a tool like Google Adwords API Extension for Excel  to sort all your content idea keywords byAdwords search volume, which will show you the search volume and competition for terms and where it’s best to invest in search terms and content creation. The Excel extension is free; all you pay for is the API costs to Google, which are minimal.
