"E-commerce on steroids:" Starbucks to offer pre-order and delivery service in 2015

During Starbucks' most recent earnings call Thursday, CEO Howard Schultz made the announcement that the coffee chain is finally entering the mobile age with a new payment and ordering app that will allow customers to pre-order beverages for pickup and delivery.

"Imagine the ability to create a standing order of Starbucks delivered hot to your desk daily. That's our version of ecommerce on steroids,"
said Schultz.

The app's initial test will begin this December in Portland, Oregon where the focus will be on allowing customers to pre-order their beverages and skip the line in store. Delivery is expected to rollout to other markets in later 2015. The Starbucks app will also allow customers to use their phones to pay for orders, reload their Starbucks cards, and redeem rewards.

The exact markets that will offer the service and the logistical details of how the service will work are still to be announced but a source told the New York Post that New York City is a market that the company is seriously "looking at."
